2009 FALL - CONGRATULATIONS DSL VARSITY SEMI-FINALISTS! CONGRATULATIONS DSL JV CHAMPIONS! Daniel P. voted DSL JV MVP, All-DSL Tournament Team Players: Mitchell H., Amy C., Mayra P., Katie K., Zoe M. - Great Job Everyone! 2009 DSL JV Champions - St. John the Baptist Tigers! Message from Coach Miller: I was actually more nervous about facing Sacred Heart in the final then I was about facing St. James (who was undefeated). The real problem with Sacred Heart was that they have some really skilled players who sliced right through our mid-field the first time we met during the season (which we managed to come back and get a tie 2-2 with them). I knew we needed to clog up the middle, and by pulling one of our strikers back to shore up the mid-field would force Sacred Heart to play the ball wide, which is where we wanted them to go. The strategy worked, and the added benefit was that we were then able to play the ball down the line and cross it back to the center, which resulted in our first goal as the ball got to Zoe's foot just outside the 18 on top of the arch and she drilled it over the head of the keeper for what would be the game winning goal. In the second half, the ball was brought back into the middle where Dan broke past the two marking backs that were on him and buried the ball in the back of the net. The defense and mid-field remained solid and our keeper Mitchell came up with several big saves on point blank shots. Assistant coach Coyne made the suggestion in the second half to put Katia up on offense, and so second half substitution Katia came on as our lone striker and did an exceptional job of holding on to the ball up on offense, created opportunities to score and gave their defense all that they could handle, which gave our players the opportunity to press up making it even harder for Sacred Heart to work the ball downfield. It was a fantastic game and every single person on the team contributed to getting us to the championships and winning. Thank you to everyone. Coach Miller |

| Notes from Previous Seasons: 2009 Fall (5th Season): Congratulations to the JV team for winning the DSL Championships! The team had an undefeated season (one tie) and finished 2nd in the section. We went to the playoffs and won straight through, beating our nemisis Sacred Heart in the final (the team that tied us during the season). It was a fantastic season and every player contributed to the team's success. Congratulations to the Varsity team for making the playoffs and finishing as semi-finalists! The Varsity team finished the season strong, coming in second place in the section (which was an awesome accomplishment), and getting through to the semi-finals in the playoffs. It was a terrific season and the team was a lot of fun to coach and be a part of. Our developmental team went undefeated through the season, playing in the top division of the DSL! It was a terrific season and all the players played hard. In the tournament, we split the team into a 3rd grade team and a 4th grade team, and while both teams played hard, we did not advance out of the group stages. It was a terrific season for the prelim playing in the top flight! 2009 Spring (4th Season): Congratulations to the JV team for making the playoffs this year, the second straight season. The JV made it to the Quarter Finals before losing to St. Maurice 3-1. The JV was on a 7 game winning streak. St. Maurice was in the finals. Congratulations to the Developmental JJV team for making it to the Quarter-Finals in the DSL tournament (out of 32 teams)! We won the group stage, and then lost to OLSH 1-0 on an unlucky own goal. OLSH went on to the finals. The Varsity squad had a rebuilding year - and rebounded to be in playoff contention past mid-season. The team played exceptionally well and we are looking forward to the fall. 2008 Fall (3rd Season): Congratulations to the JV team for making the playoffs this year, the inaugural year for the JV program. Congratulations to the JJV team for making it to the Semi-Finals 3rd place in the DSL tournament (out of 64 teams)! We lost in OVERTIME during the penalty kick shoot-out, 2-1. It took 2 rounds of penalty kicks to decide the winner (Nick R. was outstanding in goal). We won the group (#1 out of 6 teams), then went to the playoffs, losing to St. Alphonsus in OT 2-1 (penalty kicks) 2008 Spring (2nd Season):Our Varsity Team came up 2 goals shy of making the playoffs! We were tied with another team for a playoff spot and they edged us out by goal differential. Our JJV team played in the DSL tournament (64 teams), and while we did not make it out of the group round, they played very hard and actually lost to the team that came in 2nd place overall. 2007 Fall (1st Season): Our Varsity Team, in their inaugural year, won the DSL Varsity Champsionship, came in 2nd place in the section, made the playoffs as the 8th seed wildcard, and battled their way all the way through to the championship game which we won in dramatic fashion. It was a wonderful display of sportsmanship, teamwork and unity for this team. Our final game was against St. Joan of Arc, the only team to have beaten us, and they did it twice during the season. They learned that our goalie, Zach, was not very strong on high shots, and so during the season they would constantly try to kick the ball over his head. The team also had some skilled players, and our defense had a lot of trouble containing them. Just before the championship game, we overheard the St. Joan of Arc players making comments that they were guaranteed to win because it was us. I too was nervous, wondering if we could solve the puzzle they presented. Sure enough, we did. For starters, Zach had worked for over 3 weeks on his ability to jump, and when the game started and they tested him, he was pushing the ball up over the bar with ease. The other factor was that Dillon, Noble, Alec, Josef and Angela were determined not to lose. They played the hardest I have ever seen them play, and Alec's feeds to Dillon were perfect allowing Dillon to drill the ball into the back of the net. After the second goal the message was clear - we wanted this more then they did. With three minutes left in the game I turned to my old friend and high school soccer coach colleague Dave Baker and said "we're going win this thing", and as soon as I said it there was a roar from the crowd as Dillon scored the third goal which put the nail in the coffin and secured the win. It was a dramatic finish, and the prophecy that 6th grader Erin told me two days prior when I announced that the championship game was going to be on my birthday and she said "we are going to bring you the trophy as your present coach", came true.
